On the Hard in the Boat Yard Blues

We are boat yard camping LOL. We hauled Sereno II out yesterday on Thanksgiving morning for some maintenance. With the development of another late hurricane, we had to hold here in Ensenada. So the haul out seemed the best use of our time.

Everything we own is hanging in that sling. If they drop her we are homeless!

We chose to stay on the boat to keep an eye on the work progress and save some money. Hotels in Ensenada are not cheap. We have power but no heat and we can’t use any of the sinks. So here we are freezing our butts off dreaming of the French Baker and warm temperatures in Barra Navidad. Think we can sneak on to that cruise ship that just came in for a nice buffet?!!

But our decision to hold here was a good one since hurricane Sandra is stirring things up along the Mexican coast. And the biggest bonus is Austin was able to get some fairly cheap flights in and out of Cabo for Christmas. He doesn’t have any vacation days yet so this turns out to be an inexpensive solution for all of us. We just have to get there. We should be back in the water by the end of next week giving us a little over two weeks. A piece of cake if Mother Nature cooperates!

Needless to say Thanksgiving was a very simple affair for Gary and I. With limited running water we made ham, roasted potatoes and some vegetables. We even had fresh pineapple so all food groups were covered. We were hoping to make it to the cruisers potluck, but the boat yard work kept us here. And for the family part of the holiday? We talked with Austin, who made a full turkey dinner for his girlfriend and roommates. Gary’s brother had a house full and that gave us the opportunity to talk with Gary’s Mom and the phone was passed around to family. My sister and her family celebrate Thanksgiving on Friday. Why? Because she is in retail and has to work on Thanksgiving. If you feel the need to shop on Thanksgiving Day, please reconsider this in future years (I will get down off my pulpit now 🙂 ).

Gary and I are very thankful for each day we spend on the water and are thankful for family that keep the home fires burning.

We were lucky to get these steps. The alternate is an extension ladder type up the side.

They are working on the keel today. We ran aground in the lagoon in Barra Navidad. So we needed a little extra work there :)

Anthony Bourdain says that street food is where it is at and La Guerrerense in Ensenada is some of the best he has ever had. Bourdain is asking this 50 year old family owned corner spot to be part of the food market he is building on Pier 57 in New York.

So with that recommendation of course we had to check it out. Sea urchin and sea snail tostada’s with homemade hot and spicy salsa, avocado and toasted almonds made right in front of us. We ordered seconds! Nuff said.

Sea Urchin, Sea Snail, avocado, hot and spicy salsa and roasted almond tostada. Excellent!

I know many of my family and friends are going eew, sea urchin and sea snails!! Go out of your comfort zone. The combination what what they put on this tostada was some of the best seafood I've ever had.

What better way to end our stay then with San Diego Beer Week! We tagged along with Austin and tried some really good new releases. Stocked the boat up because we are headed back to the land of Corona and Pacifico.

The list of things we got done on the boat is pretty long with the last being the installation of an air conditioner. While this was a PITA to install, it will be well worth it in hot and steamy Panama next summer.

We are waiting on weather and hope to head out on Thursday. Here are some pictures we snapped in the last few weeks.

San Diego has so many great restaurants. This is OB Warehouse in Ocean Beach. The kitchen is inside an air stream trailer.
