We sailed into San Francisco Bay for the first time and stayed overnight at the Richmond Marina. Along the way we passed the East Brother Light Station Dinner, Bed and Breakfast. It is located just as you pass from San Pablo Bay into San Francisco Bay. It has been an active lighthouse for more than 133 years and overnight guests take a 10 minute boat ride and stay in one of 5 guest rooms. The restored Victorian sits on top of a very small island as you can see from this picture. Definitely a unique destination. If anyone is in the neighborhood their internet address is http://www.ebls.org.
For years we have driven by the Navel Mothball Fleet anchored out in Suisun Bay. Yesterday we sailed right up to the ships. The mothball or reserve fleet is a collection of ships that can be reactivated in an emergency if needed. I have included a link with more information. In 1975 the movie The Killer Elite with Robert Duvall and James Caan was filmed on the ships. The ships are slowly being moved out of the bay for environmental reasons. On May 26, 2012 the USS Iowa left Suisun Bay and travelled through the Strait on its way to LA where it will be part of a museum.
